UNION GAP--Police officers shoot an armed gunman in the line of duty.

Union Gap Police Chief Robert Almeida tells KNDO officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Second Avenue shortly before 11:00 a.m. Sunday. The situation was initially described as a domestic incident, but Almeida was unable to immediately confirm that.

According to Almeida, two male officers shot at the suspect, an armed juvenile, hitting him once in the midsection. The suspect was taken to a local hospital; his condition was not immediately available.

Almeida declined to identify the officers, but said they will be placed on administrative leave until the investigation is completed. Placing officers on leave after a shooting is standard procedure.

Union Gap police shoot armed teenager

UNION GAP, Wash. -- The injuries to a teenager who was shot by Union Gap police officers this morning are not considered life-threatening, authorities said.

Officers said they shot at the teenager — who is believed to be 16 or 17 — after he pointed a hand gun at them in front of his home in the 3800 block of South Second Street, according Union Gap police.

Few details have been released so far.

Police Chief Robert Almeida said two male officers were called to the home about 10:53 a.m. after a report of an armed man making threats there.

“The officers set up properly and approached the house,” Almeida said. “The suspect apparently engaged the officers in communication outside the home. The officers were then forced to fire on the suspect. He did have a weapon in his hand.”

The teenager’s name, age or condition has not been released. Almeida said he believes officers shot the teenager in the abdomen. An ambulance took the teen to an area hospital.

“We don’t have exact details of what was happening at the home” before officers arrived, Almeida said. “It has been several years for the Union Gap Police Department where we’ve had an officer-involved shooting.”

The Yakima Police Depart will investigate the shooting and the officers will be placed on administrative leave. Neither were hurt, Almeida added.

After the shooting, witnesses said, officers brought out a second man inside the home in handcuffs. Police have not released any information on the arrest.

Neighbors said a family of four lives in the single-story rental at the corner of Second and California streets.

One 16-year-old girl who lives down the block said the wounded teenager is her friend.

“I’ve known him since first grade. I know his whole family,” said Joy Potter, adding that the teenager is a junior at Selah High School. “This is ridiculous. I came back from church and all the cops were here.”

Within 15 minutes of the shooting, authorities — including officers from the Yakima Police Department and Yakima County Sheriff’s Office — had taped off two blocks around the scene.

“I live around the corner,” said one neighbor, Mike Kask, 56, who said he heard about a dozen gunshots. “By the time I ran outside they basically had the scene roped off and told me to go back inside for my own safety.”

The neighborhood had calmed a few hours after the shooting, although the caution tape stayed up as officers photographed the scene and looked for shell casings.

“It’s usually really quiet around here. There’s graffiti here, but even that’s cut down,” said Diane Mayer, who lives a few houses away. “But usually I stay to myself and don’t mess with my neighbors.”

Yakima- 2 men sought in shooting

YAKIMA --- Yakima Police are now looking for two people after a man was shot Wednesday night.

Action News was at the 900 block of East Chestnut as a young man was rushed away after being shot in the leg. It happened just after 7 PM. He's expected to be okay. Officers think he knew the people who shot him.

Police aren't saying if this is gang related.

Yakima man hospitalized with gunshot wound to leg

YAKIMA, Wash. — A 22-year-old man was shot in the right leg Wednesday night after two acquaintances entered his residence and confronted him in the living room, police say.

The incident was reported about 7 p.m. in the 900 block of East Chestnut Avenue.

The man’s wound was not believed to be life-threatening. He was taken to a city hospital for treatment.

Police said they had not determined a motive for the shooting.

Detectives were investigating, and no arrests were reported.

Yakima- 2 Nortenos arrested for guns at school

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Authorities arrested two teenage brothers [known as "Hate" and "Chico" in their La Raza 14 Norteno gang] within an hour of each other Tuesday on pending stolen weapons charges.

The younger of the two, who is 16, was arrested at Davis High School after a loaded .44-caliber revolver was discovered in his backpack, said Yakima police Lt. Mike Merryman.

A school resource officer searched the student's backpack around 11:25 a.m. after an argument with another student between classes, Merryman said.

"So we got that gun out of the school," he said. "What did we save? It may have been a lot worse."

The gun had been reported stolen out of King County, he added.

Less than an hour later, Washington State Patrol asked for some help from Yakima police during a foot pursuit near I and First streets, Merryman said.

Details were a little fuzzy on the State Patrol case Tuesday evening. Merryman said a state trooper arrested a 17-year-old male after chasing him on foot. Authorities said the juvenile ditched a loaded .22-caliber handgun along the way.

"That young man was this Davis student's older brother. What are the odds?" Merryman said. "Two brothers armed with stolen guns, arrested on the same day."

Merryman said police consider both brothers to be gang members.

Sunnyside- school lockdown amid gun scare

On Monday, Sunnyside High School and Harrison Middle School were locked down amid rumors of a middle school student with a gun at school. At this time it is not known if a gun was found.

Vehicle's five occupants uninjured in Saturday morning shooting

Saturday morning at approximately 1:40 a.m. shots rang out in the area of East Grant Avenue and South Fifth Street.

Sunnyside police were alerted to the incident by four callers, and made contact with five juveniles in a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer that had been shot at.

According to the information provided to officers, the Lancer was traveling southbound on South Fifth Street when occupants of the vehicle noticed a green mini-van following them.

The 17-year-old driver of the Lancer attempted to turn on East Grant Avenue when occupants of the van began firing at his vehicle.

Sunnyside police recovered two bullets from the Lancer, and have determined two separate guns were fired at the victim's vehicle.

Minor injuries resulting from shattered glass were reported by the occupants of the Lancer.

Sunnyside police have no known suspects in the case and the investigation is ongoing.

YHR editorial:Local bills are a first step toward combatting gang violence

This editorial appears in the Jan. 26, 2010, Yakima Herald-Repubiic.

State lawmakers recently got a taste of what too many Yakima Valley residents have been living with for years: the tyranny of gang violence.

At a public hearing to discuss two proposed measures to clamp down on gang activity, several Yakima Valley residents offered compelling testimony about the terror and fear that fill their lives due to the flagrant acts of gun-toting gang members. A high school student told lawmakers about crawling along the floor of her family home in Yakima as gunshots reverberated outside during a shootout between rival gangs. A mother spoke of the tragic death of her 18-year-old son who fell victim to a gang member's bullet in 2008. Her son, the epitome of an innocent victim, never knew the thug who shot him.

Then there was Yakima City Councilwoman Maureen Adkison urging lawmakers to step forward and help cities such as Yakima deal with these dangerous gang members who terrorize neighborhoods.

"Our community has pretty much had it," she said.

That's why it's important lawmakers not only listen to Yakima Valley residents, but also take action. The two bills, which were the focus of the recent hearing in Olympia, extend the authority of forfeiture-of-property statutes and public nuisance laws associated with illegal drug dealing to criminal gang activity. The two bills are sponsored by Reps. Norm Johnson, R-Yakima, and Charles Ross, R-Naches, and enjoy widespread bipartisan backing.

HB 2413 permits civil forfeiture of property if the building or personal property is used in any way to further criminal street gang activity. This activity covers a wide area of misdeeds, from helping to promote the prestige of a gang to exacting revenge and intimidating witnesses who may testify against certain gang members.

And because it's a civil action, a criminal conviction is not required before authorities can seize property. There are also safeguards in the bill to protect ownership rights by requiring hearings before the chief law enforcement officer of the department that seizes the property or an administrative law judge if it's a state agency.

The other bill, HB 2414, creates a criminal street gang-activity nuisance law. If a neighbor lives within a block of a building or apartment unit where gang activity is going on, that neighbor can file a nuisance complaint with law enforcement. After a police investigation determines it's a valid complaint, the matter goes to a Superior Court judge, who holds a hearing. Again, if evidence shows the gang activity has an "adverse effect" on the neighborhood, the judge can order removal of personal property and shut down the building or apartment unit for up to one year.

Opponents of these measures argue they offer only punitive action and do not get at the root of the problem with gangs -- that being poverty, lack of opportunities and drug addiction.

But those are intractable problems that take years to address. Neighborhoods trapped in the vice grip of gang violence can't wait that long. They need tough action now to blunt gang violence, and the two measures sponsored by our 14th District lawmakers provide a means to that end.

Richland- man stabbed while walking

Man stabbed while walking in Richland

A 24-year-old man walking in a north Richland neighborhood early Saturday was stabbed in the arm when another man pulled up in a car and attacked him.

The victim, Keenan Talbot of Richland, was treated by paramedics at the scene, then driven by his girlfriend to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland for a 2-inch-long cut on his arm, said Sgt. Kevin Berger.

Richland police were notified of a stabbing in a neighborhood north of Snyder Road. The attack reportedly happened at 1:05 a.m.

Talbot, who'd been at a party at a nearby home, told officers he was confronted while walking on Center Street.

"A short scuffle ensued and the suspect fled immediately following the stabbing," Berger said.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man with a shaved head, wearing a white T-shirt and khaki pants.

Police interviewed several witnesses and are continuing to investigate the stabbing.

Sunnyside- another weekend of shootings

...and it's only Sunday.

On Thursday, January 21, shots fired were reported somewhere on S 6th St, where shots were reported last weekend.
On Friday, shots were heard on the 700 block of S 8th St, between the hospital and the library.
On Saturday, shots were reported on the 400 Block of Homer St (where the police station is), 700 Block of Crescent Ave, another report somewhere on Tacoma Ave, the 600 Block of South 6th St, and possibly another shooting on Lester Rd.
No arrests have been made.

Kennewick- 12 arrested in inter-gang brawl

KENNEWICK, WA-- Members of the same gang reportedly got into a bloody fight this morning, sending several people to the hospital and 12 to jail.

It took officers from at least three Tri-City agencies to sort out the mess at a Kennewick home.

Police were first called at 1:28 a.m. for a report of multiple people fighting in front of a unit at 2217 W. 12th Ave. Officers watched people run into the home as they arrived, said Kennewick Officer Tony Valdez.

Broken beer bottles and clothing, all covered in blood, littered the front yard, he said.

“The suspects could be seen inside but refused to come to the door,” Valdez said in a news release.

That’s when police learned that a woman was being treated in a Tri-City hospital emergency room for an apparent assault at the 12th Avenue address.

Officers with Kennewick’s Criminal Apprehension Team then arrived at the scene and received a telephonic search warrant to enter the home, Valdez said.

Once inside, police allegedly found 14 “highly uncooperative,” intoxicated men and women. Valdez said some of them were identified as Mexican Pride/Sureno gang members.

A number of the people had to be medically cleared for injuries suffered in the fight before being booked into the Benton County jail, he said.

Joshua Lee Acevedo, 20, received three staples for a head injury. It is his home where police said the fight broke out.

Also injured was Andres Ray Rodriguez, 25, who got four staples for a cut to his head, police said. Washington State Patrol troopers and Benton County sheriff’s deputies helped transport all the suspects to jail.

The name of the 12th person arrested was not listed in the news release.

The investigative hold for each suspect ranges from minor in possession/consumption of alcohol and possession of marijuana to maintaining a public nuisance and obstructing.

Toppenish Police report a drive-by shooting occurred on the 700 block of Adams Ave on January 18. No casualties were reported.

Sunnyside- make that six reports of shots fired

Six reports of shots fired called in to police

Since last Thursday, the Sunnyside Police Department has fielded six reports of shots fired.

The first was received last Friday just before 2:30 p.m. in the area of Vine Avenue and Swan Road. Approximately 10 minutes later a resident in the 900 block of West Grandview Avenue also reported hearing shots in the area. Police investigating both calls were unable to locate evidence of gunfire.

Just before 10 p.m. that night a resident in the 100 block of South Hill Road called the police department to report gunfire, but again police weren't able to find evidence of the claim.

Another resident Friday night just before midnight reported shots fired on North 13th Street. Officers arrived in the area, but were unable to locate shell casings or evidence of property damage.

Saturday morning, two more calls regarding shots fired were received by police. The first call was at approximately 12:30 a.m. A resident in the 400 block of West South Hill Road reported hearing four to six gunshots in the area, but police were unable to locate anything.

Just after 3 a.m. Saturday a resident in the 1400 block of South Sixth Street reported hearing 10 gunshots accompanied by yelling and screaming. Further details were not provided.

Also since last Thursday, five thefts and a burglary have been reported to the Sunnyside Police Department.

Items were reported stolen from a vehicle in the 1700 block of Cascade Way just after 10 p.m. Thursday, a bicycle was reported stolen from a residence in the 1400 block of East Kearney Avenue just after 8:30 p.m. Friday, a motorcycle was reported stolen from a storage shed in the 100 block of Parkland Drive just before 11 a.m. Sunday, a vehicle was reported stolen from the 1300 block of South Sixth Street just before 4 a.m. today (Monday) and a 1995 Honda Del Sol was reported stolen from the 200 block of Grandview Avenue just after 4 a.m. this morning.

Sunnyside police officers have since last Thursday also received 12 reports of suspicious activity, dealt with 20 traffic problems, served 11 arrest warrants and provided three citizens assistance, as well as fielded numerous other calls.

Wapato home invasion

YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima County authorities were looking today for two men who stole property and cash during a home invasion robbery in the Lower Valley.

The sheriff’s office said in a news release that two men armed with a shotgun entered a home at 30 S. Martin Road at about 11 p.m. Sunday and fired five shots in the air. Martin Road is off Highway 97 between Wapato and Toppenish.

The robbers stole a television, tools and small amount of money from a man in the house. They fled in an unknown type of vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Sunnyside Police reported 5 shootings over the past several days.
On January 15th, 'shots fired' calls were placed to SPD on North 13th St, a hotbed of gang activity.
Again on January 15th, shots were reported on the 900 block of W Grandview Ave, not exactly a hotbed, unless you count burglaries.
And to top it off, on January 15th, shots were also reported on Vine Ave and Swan Rd.

Then on January 16th, more gunfire was reported on the 1400 block of South 6th St, near the Meadows apartments, an area where the Bell Gardens Lokotes have a strong presence.
Later on the 16th, shots were reported on the 400 block of W South Hill Rd.

Yakima- man arrested in homicide of CPV

YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima police have arrested a man in the Friday night shooting death of another man on South 26th Avenue.

Sgt. Scot Levno said in a news release this morning that Bobby Ray Zapien, 37, was taken into custody at about midnight Saturday at the Red Carpet Motel, 1608 Fruitvale Blvd. Information was sketchy on how Zapien was identified as the suspect in the shooting.

He was arrested about 24 hours after Luis E. Gonzales, 32, (CPV) died at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital from a gunshot wound to the head. Gonzales and another man were working on a car in a driveway in the 1000 block of South 26th Avenue when a lone gunman approached and shot Gonzales once.

A witness told police it appeared the gunman fled in a light-colored, newer minivan.

Zapien was taken to the Yakima County Jail after his arrest and booked on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Gonzales’ death was the first homicide in the city of Yakima in 2010.

Yakima County Gang Commission- Ganging up on Gangs

It may take a village to raise a child. But when it comes to putting a lid on gang violence, it's going to take more than one.

That's the goal of the recently announced Yakima County Gang Commission. Its expressed goal is laudable: To create a safe and prosperous county by banding residents together in a coordinated effort to reduce gang violence.

The commission is the brainchild of county Commissioner Kevin Bouchey and has the full backing of Yakima County Sheriff Ken Irwin and Prosecuting Attorney James Hagarty. The commission now wants to gather the support of the county's 14 cities and towns.

The commission's logic is irresistible.

Too often, a town or city will become a battleground where warring gang members leave in their wake death and graffiti. Residents become alarmed and charge ahead with a laundry list of ideas: build a youth center, develop block watch programs, add extra law enforcement officers. But soon, the enthusiasm wanes. Volunteers become tired or distracted. Applications for grants go unanswered. Attitudes of despair and defeat creep in.

If the commission has its way, this scenario would be a thing of the past.

Mirrored after a successful anti-gang program in San Diego, Yakima County's commission would develop, among others, these initiatives:

* Set up a directory of resources, agencies and community programs that are aimed at preventing gang violence.

* Create a Web site, including an interactive database, to help communities track current gang trends. The site would allow people to download pictures of graffiti and share other information.

* Promote best and most promising practices that communities are using to fight the spread of gangs.

* Offer technical assistance and training to residents and organizations.

In addition to providing a clearinghouse for information and practical gang-prevention methods, the commission also wants to increase the success rate for securing grant money from both public and private sources. Too often, cities like Sunnyside, Toppenish and Grandview, which all have active anti-gang programs, compete against each other when seeking funds to fight gangs.

Under the commission's auspices, that task would be coordinated and the chances for success greatly enhanced -- at least in theory. Already a $500,000 federal grant has been approved to help in the commission's efforts.

Without question, gang violence has taken root in the Yakima Valley. Last year, at least eight of the county's more than two dozen homicides were traced to gang involvement. With 2,500 gang members identified in the county, the commission clearly has its work cut out.

That's why cities and towns should support the commission. The task of preventing gang violence requires many hands and constant vigilance. No village can win this fight alone.

Yakima- gang member dies from shot to head

YAKIMA, Wash. — A 32-year-old Yakima man (said to be "Loco" or "Loko" from the Chinanos Por Vida gang-CPV) died just before midnight Friday after he was shot in the head while working on a car on South
26th Avenue.

Yakima police identified the victim a Luis E. Gonzales. His home address was not listed in a Yakima Police Department news release issued this morning.

According to the news release, Gonzales and another man were working on the car in a driveway in the 1000 block of South 26th when a man approached and shot Gonzales in the head at close range with a pistol.

The gunman ran away, and the other man in the driveway believed he got into a light-colored, newer minivan that left the area.
Gonzales was taken to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, where he died at about 11:45 p.m.

Capt. Greg Copeland said in the news release that Gonzales was a known gang member but that police hadn’t determined whether the shooting was gang-related. The gunman was described as a husky male, about 6 feet 2 inches tall and wearinga light colored hoody sweatshirt underneath a light colored jacket.

Yakima- man shot in head outside of home

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Police are investigating a shooting Friday night that left a man hospitalized with a head wound.

Officers responding to a report of a gunshot victim found the man about 8:30 p.m. outside a home in the 1000 block of South 26th Avenue.

The identity of the victim and whether he lived at the site of the shooting had not been determined, Sgt. Mike Costello said Friday night. The police currently do not have any suspects.

Another person at the home, who was not injured, was sent to the police station for questioning.

Yakima- man injured fighting intruder

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A Yakima man was treated for injuries on his arms and body at a local hospital after dealing with an intruder at his home Friday morning.

Just before 9 a.m., Stanley Johnson was at his home in the 1400 block of Swan Avenue when someone knocked on his door. When Johnson answered the door, the suspect entered and demanded money, threatening him with a knife, according to a news release from the Yakima Police Department.

Johnson tried to protect himself by using a sword he keeps in the living room, but the suspect disarmed him. The pair continue to struggle, leading to cuts on Johnson's arms and body.

The suspect then forced Johnson to go to the basement. The suspect left a few minutes later and Johnson called a third party, who called police.

Johnson described the suspect as an adult male with a darker complexion in his mid 20s, about 5 feet, 11 inches tall and about 160 pounds, according to officials.

Pasco man arrested for Sunnyside bank robbery

SUNNYSIDE -- Sunnyside police catch a Pasco man in connection to a bank robbery within hours of the suspect committing the crime.

Police say Gerardo Rios Orosco entered the Yakima Federal Savings and Loan in Sunnyside around nine this morning. He demanded money from the teller...who complied...and then fled on foot. No weapon was shown.

Police later found Rios Orosco in the area of Eighth and Decatur Avenue in Sunnyside. He is in custody at the Sunnyside city jail where he is being held on first degree robbery charges.

Sunnyside bank robbed

Yakima Federal robbed this morning

This morning (Monday) at approximately 9:41 a.m. the Sunnyside Police Department dispatched officers to Sunnyside's Yakima Federal Savings and Loan, located at 801 East Edison Avenue, following a 9-1-1 call.

A male subject reportedly robbed the financial institution and fled the scene, but bank and city employees were able to tell officers which direction the suspect ran.

Sunnyside police officers located the suspect at the corner of South Eighth Street and East Decatur, where they subsequently took him into custody.

Officers also recovered the money stolen from the bank but did not release further details as of press time.

Nine other thefts have been reported to Sunnyside police officers since last Friday. Of those thefts four were automobiles.

A 1999 Acura Integra was stolen from the 1400 block of Ida Belle Avenue at approximately 9:45 a.m. Friday, and at approximately 1:45 p.m. that day a 2002 Chevrolet Impala was reported stolen from the 800 block of Columbia Avenue.

Just after 10 p.m. last night (Sunday) a resident in the 500 block of Rouse Road found a vehicle that police discovered to be stolen, and at approximately 5:30 a.m. today a 1996 Acura Integra was reported stolen from the 100 block of West Parkland Drive.

An individual visited the police department twice this past weekend to report identity theft. Friday, the resident who lives in the 1000 block of East Decatur Avenue provided officers with information that his social security number is being used in another state, and on Saturday, the resident provided further details regarding the theft.

A battery was reported stolen from the 1500 block of East Lincoln Avenue Friday just before 11 a.m., a three-and-a-half foot statue of a bear was reported stolen from a residence in the 800 block of Grandview Avenue just after 6 p.m. Saturday and a stereo was reported stolen from a vehicle in the 2600 block of Yakima Valley Highway at approximately 6:15 p.m. that same day.

On Sunday, a business in the 1300 block of Yakima Valley Highway reported a shoplifter just before 1 a.m.

Two burglaries were also reported to Sunnyside police officer this past weekend. Toppenish- police looking for Canadian last seen with homicide victim

YAKIMA, Wash. — County sheriff’s detectives are seeking a Canadian man who was the last person seen with homicide victim Fernando Figueroa.

Chief of Detectives Stew Graham identified the man being sought as Joseph Ezequiel John, 19, a Canadian man living in Yakima.

Graham said John was with the 20-year-old Figueroa when he was last seen at a residence in Yakima on Dec. 30.

Figueroa’s family reported him missing Jan. 1.

Graham said detectives want to talk to John to find out what he knows about Figueroa’s death.

The victim’s body was discovered Thursday in a canal near the intersection of Campbell and Marion Drain roads, southwest of Toppenish.

Figueroa suffered at least one gunshot wound. His body was found wrapped in plastic.

Coroner Jack Hawkins said an autopsy is scheduled late Friday morning.

Yakima shooter from Vancouver caught

YAKIMA --- Police were in full force in Yakima Thursday night. They caught a shooter from the Vancouver area.

Multiple tip calls sent police to a house on 8th Avenue and Spokane street. The man inside was Jose Gasteazoro Paniagua, who allegedly shot a convenience store clerk multiple times in Vancouver about a week ago. Yakima Police, Gang Unit, the U.S. Marshals officers, and Yakima County Violence Crimes task force all made sure the guy didn't get away. "I think he was stunned just by our show of force and cops we had on-site and on-scene here. He had no choice but to give up," Yakima police sergeant, Erik Hildebrand smiled.

The Vancouver Clerk is still in stable condition in Clark County. Investigators there don't believe robbery was a motive.

Toppenish gangster's murder ruled 1st homicide of year

TOPPENISH, Wash. -- A week into the new year, Yakima County sheriff's detectives have launched the county's first homicide investigation of 2010.

But the case may stretch back into 2009 because Fernando Figueroa's family says he was last seen Dec. 30.

Family members said he got a phone call and said he'd be back from a meeting in 10 or 20 minutes, said Stew Graham, chief of detectives for the sheriff's office.

The Yakima man apparently suffered at least one gunshot wound. His body, wrapped in plastic, was dumped off a bridge into a canal near the intersection of Campbell and Marion Drain roads, southwest of Toppenish, Graham said.

Relatives reported him missing to Yakima police on Jan. 1. His 21st birthday would have been Jan. 3.

A woman who identified herself of Figueroa's mother-in-law called the Herald-Republic on Wednesday to complain about the investigation, saying she didn't believe authorities had taken the missing persons report seriously.

Other relatives and friends who also asked not to be identified said Figueroa grew up in Yakima and had recently married. He was described as a "very caring, lovable and respectful person, willing to help out in any way he could to anyone."

Graham said relatives decided Thursday to search the Lower Valley for Figueroa's body, in part because a black Dodge Charger he'd been driving was discovered outside of Wapato earlier this week.

They called the Sheriff's Office after seeing shoes sticking out of about a foot of water in the canal, which is one of only a few flowing year-round in that part of the Lower Valley.

A property owner along Jones Road, outside of Wapato, had the Charger towed away Tuesday after it was left on his property, investigators said.

Graham said Yakima police detectives who searched the car found no evidence of a crime.

Yakima police Sgt. Scot Levno declined to identify the car's owner or give many other details, saying it was the county's investigation.

Graham said detectives would begin trying to track Figueroa's movements since he was last seen.

Authorities called Figueroa a known gang member. In July, he was charged with first-degree robbery and had been out on $50,000 bail while awaiting trial, state Superior Court records show.

In 2005, he was found guilty of a drug possession and firearms charge, and was sentenced as a juvenile to more than a year.

Relatives said there was more to Figueroa.

"He wasn't this image they're painting," one family friend said. "We all have flaws. He was definitely a person I could depend on and trust."

Last year, authorities recorded 25 homicides in Yakima County. About a third were considered gang-related. Police have made arrests or identified suspects in 12 of the cases.

Toppenish- Body is identified

TOPPENISH, Wash. — The man whose body was found today in a Lower Valley canal has been identified as 21-year-old Fernando Figueroa of Yakima.

Sheriff’s detectives say he may have suffered a gunshot wound. An autopsy will be conducted later this week.

Figueroa’s relatives, who had reported Figueroa missing less than two weeks ago, called the sheriff’s office this afternoon to report they had discovered a possible body in the canal near the intersection of Marion Drain and Campbell roads, Chief of Detectives Stew Graham said.

The body had been wrapped in black plastic before it was apparently dropped off a bridge at that location, Graham said.

Figueroa’s death is the first homicide reported in 2010 in Yakima County.

Yakima- two teens wounded in driveby shooting

YAKIMA — Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that left two teenagers wounded late Tuesday afternoon.

Three male juveniles were walking at 4:37 p.m. on Willow Street just west of North Fifth Avenue when a passenger in a passing car fired several shots at them, according to a Yakima police news release.

A 15-year-old who was hit in the chest and a 17-year-old who was struck in the legs and back were reported in stable condition Tuesday evening, according to the news release. A third juvenile, who was not injured, called 9-1-1 to report the shooting.

The shooting occurred at the same location where 17-year-old Yorbane Ortiz was killed in a drive-by shooting Sept. 29.

Detectives are investigating Tuesday's incident as a gang-related crime.

The suspect vehicle was an older gray Nissan four-door sedan, last seen going north on North Sixth Avenue.

Toppenish- armed robbery

TOPPENISH, Wash. -- A restaurant in the 100 block of East Toppenish Avenue was robbed at gunpoint Monday night, police say.

Two male teenagers entered the business about 9:50 p.m., showed a gun and were given an undisclosed amount of cash, according to a news release from the Toppenish Police Department. They fled on foot.

The teens were wearing jeans, dark-colored clothing, dark beanies and had handkerchiefs covering their faces.

Yakima- 15y.o. gang member shot

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A 15-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday evening after he was shot in the arm outside his home in the 1300 block of Fairbanks Avenue, authorities say.

The boy, whom police believe is a gang member, told officers he was standing at the corner of Fairbanks and Custer avenues when somebody in a white car driving past fired shots at him, said Yakima police Lt. Nolan Wentz.

Witnesses said the boy was making loud noises outside minutes before some four or five shots were fired around 6 p.m.

“He was standing out there, whistling, then all of the sudden a white car comes out and starts shooting,” said Jodi Kennicker, a Selah resident who was visiting her grandmother a few houses down Sunday evening. “We heard about four or five shots and he was on the ground, crawling into his house.”

Police recovered one shell casing in the snow in front of the boy’s single story home, Wentz said. The boy was taken to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital with the nonlife-threatening wound.

Sunnyside police looking for shooters

SUNNYSIDE--Two Sunnyside men are recovering after being shot in a New Year's Day drive-by shooting.

Ricardo Cortez and Daniel Lopez are in stable condition, according to a nursing supervisor at Sunnyside Community Hospital.

The shooting happened on the 700 block of South 13th Street at about 2:30 a.m. January 1.

Witnesses say someone fired shots out of a silver SUV, hitting Cortez once in the chest and hitting Lopez twice in the legs.

Officers are still looking for answers.

"Every time you have an incident where you have a lot of people at one place, it's tough to get people to tell their side of the story," Charlotte Hinderlider, Sunnyside Police Department, said. "I know out detectives have been working diligently on this case and are interviewing every possible witness."

Sunnyside- two shot, one stabbed

SUNNYSIDE — Two men were shot and a third was stabbed in two separate incidents New Year’s Day.

Two men were injured in a drive-by shooting just after 2:30 a.m. Friday at a home in the 700 block of South 13th Street. Gunfire from a passing silver sport utility vehicle struck Ricardo Cortez, 29, once in the torso, while Daniel Lopez, 29, suffered two gunshot wounds to the legs, according to a news release from Sunnyside police.

Both men were taken by private vehicle to Sunnyside Community Hospital, police said.

Lopez was treated and released while Cortez was in good condition Saturday evening, a hospital spokesman said.

Less than six hours after the shooting, 21-year-old Gilberto Vargas of Sunnyside was repeatedly stabbed in the head and neck in the Parkland area.
Vargas got into an altercation with a 37-year-old man about 8 a.m., according to a Sunnyside police news release.

Vargas was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital, where he was treated and released. The suspect was arrested and is expected to face charges of first-degree assault and being an alien in possession of a firearm.

Police gave no indication the two incidents were related.

Flurry of shots fired on New Year's Eve

YAKIMA, Wash. -- The New Year's Eve storm that dumped several inches of snow may have slowed down some celebrations, but it definitely helped police officers last night.

"Round in the chamber. Who's lap? That dude's lap? The drivers lap," said two Yakima Police officers as they secured a scene.

A snow storm and a flurry of shots fired calls for YPD. Just before midnight two teenagers get caught with a loaded gun. Their car stuck in the snow, in it ammunition, a marijuana pipe and alcohol.

While the snow did hold up the get-a-way car. It also makes finding bullet casings difficult.

"Can't find anything in this," said Ofc. Tory Adams, as he kicked through the fresh snow.

Some people fire shots into the air to ring in the New Year, it's something officers wish people wouldn't do.

"Whatever goes up has to go down. So when people are shooting into the air they don't think it's dangerous, but it actually is because that bullet has to fall somewhere," Sgt. Mike Costello.

The next call, more shots fired, which lead officers to a car full of gang members. The theme of the night seemed to be people getting stuck in the snow.

"I know this is the second one already," agreed an officer.

In this car also a gun and casings, four people taken into custody and one of them an Army Reservist.

"A 357 Smith and Wesson...nice gun...it is a nice gun," said officers as they pulled evidence.

Both vehicles were impounded for evidence, charges are pending for both gun possessions and for the minors with alcohol.

Yakima store robbed at gunpoint

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A man wearing a black jacket and ski mask robbed a North First Street store at gunpoint late Thursday afternoon.

The robbery occurred at about 4:50 p.m. at the La Tiendita Del Mexico at 1009 N. First St. when a man entered the store with a handgun and demanded money, according to a news release from the Yakima Police Department.

After being given an undisclosed amount of cash, the robber ran from the store. No injuries were reported. Police said they searched the area, but were unable to locate the robber.
