Sunnyside- two shot, one stabbed

SUNNYSIDE — Two men were shot and a third was stabbed in two separate incidents New Year’s Day.

Two men were injured in a drive-by shooting just after 2:30 a.m. Friday at a home in the 700 block of South 13th Street. Gunfire from a passing silver sport utility vehicle struck Ricardo Cortez, 29, once in the torso, while Daniel Lopez, 29, suffered two gunshot wounds to the legs, according to a news release from Sunnyside police.

Both men were taken by private vehicle to Sunnyside Community Hospital, police said.

Lopez was treated and released while Cortez was in good condition Saturday evening, a hospital spokesman said.

Less than six hours after the shooting, 21-year-old Gilberto Vargas of Sunnyside was repeatedly stabbed in the head and neck in the Parkland area.
Vargas got into an altercation with a 37-year-old man about 8 a.m., according to a Sunnyside police news release.

Vargas was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital, where he was treated and released. The suspect was arrested and is expected to face charges of first-degree assault and being an alien in possession of a firearm.

Police gave no indication the two incidents were related.
