Sunnyside- former police clerk arrested

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — A former police clerk accused of embezzling from her employer here was arrested today in Southern California.

Virginia Perez, 21, will be extradited to Yakima County for arraignment in Superior Court for five counts of felony theft, according to a Sunnyside Police news release.

The Yakima County prosecutor’s office issued a warrant for Perez back in September.

Sunnyside Police accused Perez of stealing or borrowing $11,000 from the department in the form of bail money, cash left for prisoners by friends and family, and money that prisoners had in their pockets or purses at least 32 times between May and August last year, according to court documents.

Perez, now a Los Angeles resident, worked as one of two police front-counter clerks for about 15 months in 2007 and 2008.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service participated in Perez’s arrest, Sunnyside Police said.
