Yakima- gang shooting injures one

YAKIMA, Wash. — About a dozen police officers responded to a shooting that sent one person to the hospital and slowed traffic around the 200 block of South Naches Avenue for an hour this afternoon.

Police say about a dozen rounds were fired by at least two gang members as school students were walking home after classes.

It began around 2:50 p.m. when about three gang members walked past rival gang members in front of a two-story house near Spruce Street, police say.

“It was like a machine gun, real fast — pop! pop! pop!” said a Washington Middle School sixth-grader who had been walking home.

He was with his older sister and her friend and were a half-block away when they saw a group of young men in gang colors walk past some rivals.

“You saw about four of them, then there was gunfire and they ran in opposite directions,” said an eighth-grader at Washington Middle School.

Yakima police Lt. Nolan Wentz said at two guns were fired and officers are still trying to piece together what happened.

Police are at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital interviewing the young man who was shot in his left arm.

The wound is not life threatening, Wentz added.
